Summary
要約

>Top 0. Disruptive technological change:

  • The research in this book finds that managing better, working harder, and not making so many dumb mistakes is not the answer to the innovators's dilemma.
  • >Top Some very capable executives in some extraordinarily successful companies, using the best managerial techniques, have led their firms toward failure.......because they don't work in the face of disruptive technological change. Initially they seemed somewhat counterintuitive, but as I came to understand them, the insights were reveled as simple and sensible.

>Top 1. The pace of progress:

  • markets demand may be different from the progress offered by technology. This means that products that do not appear to be useful to our customers today may squarely address their needs tomorrow.

>Top 2. Imporve profitability:

  • Executives understand what the company should do to improve profitability. This means that until other alternatives that appear to be financially more attractive have disappeared or been eliminated, managers will find it extraordinarily difficult to keep resources focus on the pursuit of a disruptive technology.

>Top 3. Sustaining technologies:

  • Successful companies have a practices capability in taking sustaining technologies to market, routinely giving their customers more and better versions of what they say they want.
  • This is a valued capability for handling sustaining innovation, but it will not serve the purpose when handling disruptive technologies. Disruptive technology should be framed as a marketing challenge, not a technological one.

>Top 4. More specialized and contex-specific:

  • The capabilities of most organizations are far more specialized and context-specific than most managers are inclined to believe. This is because capabilities are forged within value networks. Organizations have the capability to tolerate failure along some dimensions, and an incapacity to tolerate other types of failure.
  • They have the capability to make money when gross margins are at one level, and an inability to make money when margins are at another.....Very often, the new markets enabled by disruptive technologies require very different capabilities along each of these dimensions.

>Top 5. Fast, inexpensive, and flexible forays:

  • The information required to make large and decisive investments in the face of disruptive technology simply does not exit. It needs to be created through fast, inexpensive, and flexible forays into the market and the product. The risk is very high that any particular idea about the product attributes or market applications of a disruptive technology may not prove to be viable.

>Top 6. disruptive or a sustaining technology:

  • It is not wise to adopt a blanket technology strategy to be always a leader or always a follower. Companies need to take distinctly different postures depending on whether they are addressing a disruptive or a sustaining technology.
  • >Top Disruptive innovations entail significant first-mover advantages; Leadership is important. Sustaining situations, however, very often do not.

>Top 7. model for how to make money:

  • Perhaps the most powerful protection that small entrant firms enjoy as they build the emerging markets for disruptive technologies is that they are doing something that it simply does not make sense for the established leaders to do. Despite their endowments in technology, brand names, manufacturing prowess, management experience, distribution muscle, and just plain cash, successful companies populated by good managers have a genuinely hard time doing what does not fit their model for how to make money.

Comment
  1. >Top Established great firms continue to innovate or improve the existing products responding to the requests of their customers. Consequently, they tend to make the products which have more excessive quality than the customers' expectation.
  2. On the other hand, such new product as game machine appears in the market with much less quality, but with surprisingly cheap price than computers, reflecting disruptive technology. Thereafter, quality of game machines improve and realize cheaper price.
  3. At this stage, customers of old market show avalanche effect rushing to the new market; thus the excellent firms of the old market may fail.
  • In US this book is widely read as a reference book among top executives of great firms.
