    • Everything will communicate like neural system.
    • Complete new industry rise into power.
    • Technology diffuse to worldwide.
    • Two revolutions (industrial revolution and railway revolution started from UK) provided muscle system.
    • Information revolution provides neither muscle nor energy, but neural system.

  • I (=Information) infrastructure, not IT infrastructure matters.

    • Share information will be culled by information itself.
    • Collect of excellent members and prepare innovative and free environment. Then make many small units, which work emphasizing speedy actions, and causing fierce competition in the organization.

    4. Web

  • Google
(PFP=Pay for Performance)

>Top 3. Long tail:

  • 0Pelorosaurus<Right> >Top Long tail: image of huge herbivore dinosaur Apatosaurus with elongated neck and tail (4.5m tall, 21m long, and 40 tonnes.)
    • Actually, long-tail story here, let's imagine a dinosaur with 10m height having much longer tail of 5km.
  • Amazon.com and Long tail.
    • Real bookstore, Barnes and Noble, has book stock of 130,000 titles. Amazon.com says 2/3 of its sales by the upper 130,000 titles; this means 1/3 sold by the lower 130,000 titles (=long tail) (Light gains make a heavy purse.)
  • Browsing in the world bookstore:
Amazon.com considers to scan all the books (sold at bookstores and stored in libraries) and to give information where is written. After browsing the content, if only 1% might buy the book.
    • Long tail business model:
mechanism of free participation and natural selection can expand unknown possibility and elicit new business.
    • Is long tail a lose or wipeout, or unknown possibility?
  • iTunes of Apple:
    • Is this a new way of distribution of music or a new creation by using Internet?
  • Contrary concept of long tail:
    • The Pareto Law (law of 80:20), for example, '80% of total wealth is owned by 20% of total population', or '80% of total rejects derive from 20% of defects.', or ' 80% of sales are derived from 20% of merchandises,' etc.
    • This means the most important thing is the minority of 20%, and the remained 80% is insignificant.
    • The weight of cost structure of big organizations cannot deal with the long tail market.
  • The year of Internet - 1995:
    • Yahoo (Jerry Yang) , Amazon.com (Jeff Bezos) , eBay (Pierre Omidyar) were established in 1995. (Google 1998)

  • Amazon.com
    Amazon.com

  • Direction of Web evolution:

4. Web 2.0:

  • Web 2.0

    • All expressing society = (Cheap revolution ) x (Search engine) x (Automatic order formation system ?)
    • The above 'automatic order formation system' is difficult to make.
  • Value of blog:
    • a field of empowerment of knowledge; publish or perish?
    • Intelligent manufacturing tool:
Scrap book, Kyoto Univ style card, Hypercard, Outline processor, Filofax, Post-it, ....

  • All three trends (CIO = Chief revolution, Internet, and Open source) have arisen in 1960s.
    • Cheap revolution is caused by the drastic price down of electronic memory and storage, enabling many digital services in lower prices.
    • Open source also has such impact: if many seeds of intellectual property freely distributed on Internet, worldwide intelligent resources begins to connect autonomously each other.
    • Open source shares not only the result, but also the process of creation, enabling involved people to leave a kind of living witness.
  • Various open source phenomena:
    • MIT's courseware: MIT designed to make freely open all its 2,000 courses, starting from 2002, ending by 2007.
    • At the start-up of the project, there was an enthusiasm how to make MIT's education as world platform. But this project connotes the contradiction between open policy and university business.
